The Triad sits in an awkward climate band for pools. It is warm enough that plenty of owners keep their pools open year-round, and cold enough that hard freezes happen every winter. That combination produces the most common expensive winter failure we see: an open pool with no freeze protection during a night in the twenties.
What actually breaks
Water expands when it freezes. In a pool, the large volume of water is not the issue, since it rarely freezes deeply. The problem is everywhere the water is confined: pump housings, filter bodies, heater exchangers, valves, and the plumbing at the equipment pad above the frost line.
A cracked pump housing, a split heater exchanger or a burst filter body are the typical results, and they are not cheap repairs. Skimmers can also crack if water in them freezes, and that repair involves breaking into the deck.
The two legitimate approaches
Full winterization. The pool is closed for the season: water lowered below the skimmer, lines blown out and plugged, antifreeze added to lines where appropriate, equipment drained, and a cover installed. This is the most secure approach and it means the pool is unavailable until spring.
Keeping it open with freeze protection. The pool stays running, and equipment is protected by running circulation during freezing conditions. Moving water does not freeze readily, so a system that circulates through a cold night generally protects itself.
What does not work is the middle ground, which is what most damage comes from: an open pool with equipment that is not running and not protected.
How freeze protection works
A freeze protection device or an automation system with freeze logic monitors air temperature and starts the circulation equipment when temperature approaches freezing, keeping water moving through the plumbing and equipment.
Several things are worth knowing:
- The sensor location matters. A sensor in a sheltered spot reads warmer than the actual conditions at the equipment pad.
- It has to be set to run everything. If freeze mode only runs the main pump, water sitting in a spa line, a water feature line or a heater bypass can still freeze.
- It depends on power. A winter storm that takes out electricity also takes out your freeze protection, which is exactly when you need it.
- Variable-speed pumps should run at adequate speed during freeze protection, since very low flow may not protect everything.
Before the first hard freeze
A short checklist in late fall prevents most problems:
- Test the freeze protection device or automation freeze setting and confirm it actually starts the equipment
- Check the sensor location and condition
- Confirm all valves are positioned so freeze mode circulates through every line, including spa and features
- Insulate exposed plumbing at the equipment pad
- Make sure the water level is correct, since a low level can leave the skimmer or pump unable to draw
- Clean the filter, because restricted flow during a freeze event is a problem
- Know how to manually run the equipment if automation fails
If the power goes out during a freeze
This is the scenario that catches people. If you lose power with a hard freeze forecast and the pool is open, the safest response is to drain water out of the pump, filter and heater according to the manufacturer's instructions, opening drain plugs so there is nothing confined to freeze.
It is inconvenient and it is far cheaper than replacing equipment. Know where the drain plugs are before you need them, in daylight, rather than working it out with a flashlight during an ice storm.
Solar covers and freezes
A cover holds heat and reduces the chance of surface ice, which helps. It is not freeze protection for equipment, since the failure point is at the pad, not the pool.
Ice on the pool surface
A thin layer of surface ice on the pool itself is generally not damaging to the structure. Do not try to break it up with tools, since you risk damaging the finish, and never let anyone walk on it. It will clear when temperatures rise.
What matters is whether water is moving through the plumbing, not whether the surface has a skin of ice.
Deciding which approach fits you
If you genuinely use the pool or the spa in cool weather and you have reliable freeze protection with automation, keeping it open is reasonable. If the pool sits unused from November to March, closing it properly is simpler, cheaper to run, and eliminates the freeze risk entirely.
The wrong answer is leaving it open by default without deciding, which is how equipment gets destroyed by a single cold snap.
