Pool Electrical: Bonding, Grounding and GFCI

Of everything in a pool project, the electrical work is where a shortcut has the most serious consequences. It is also the part homeowners understand least, partly because two of the key terms sound like synonyms and are not.

Bonding and grounding are different things

Grounding provides a path for fault current back to the electrical source so a breaker trips. It protects equipment and interrupts faults.

Bonding connects all the metal components in and around the pool together so they are all at the same electrical potential. That is the key idea: not zero voltage, but equal voltage.

Electric shock happens when there is a voltage difference between two things a person touches at once. If the pool water, the reinforcing steel in the shell, the ladder, the light niche, the equipment, the deck reinforcement and any nearby metal are all bonded together, no difference can exist between them, and there is nothing to shock you.

A pool can be perfectly grounded and still dangerous if it is not properly bonded. This is the single most important electrical concept in pool construction.

What gets bonded

An equipotential bonding grid typically ties together the shell reinforcing steel, metal fittings, ladders and handrails, light niches, the perimeter deck reinforcement, pumps and motors, metal equipment enclosures, and the water itself through a bonding fixture. The work is done during rough-in, before the shell is placed, and it is verified at inspection.

Because it is buried in concrete, it is essentially impossible to correct later without demolition. This is why the pre-gunite inspection exists and why it matters.

GFCI protection

Ground fault circuit interrupters detect small imbalances between outgoing and returning current, meaning current leaking somewhere it should not be, and cut power in a fraction of a second. Around pools, GFCI protection is required for underwater lighting circuits, receptacles within the required distance of the pool, and pool equipment, with the specifics set by code.

GFCIs are also a maintenance item, not a permanent install. Test them monthly using the test button, and replace any that do not trip or do not reset. A GFCI that has failed silently is common and provides nothing.

Lighting

Modern low-voltage LED pool lighting has largely displaced older line-voltage fixtures, and it is a meaningful safety improvement as well as a better light. If you own an older pool with original line-voltage lighting, having it evaluated is worthwhile.

Light niches and their conduits are also a common water intrusion point on aging pools, and water where it should not be plus electricity is exactly the combination to avoid.

Overhead lines and clearances

Code sets required clearances between a pool and overhead electrical conductors, and those are not negotiable. On some Triad lots, particularly older neighborhoods with overhead service, this genuinely constrains where a pool can go. Identify it during design, because discovering it after layout is an expensive redesign.

The same applies to underground service, which needs locating before excavation.

What to check on an older pool

If you bought a house with an existing pool, particularly one built decades ago, several things are worth having a qualified professional evaluate:

This is not a homeowner inspection. It is work for a licensed electrician with pool experience, and it is inexpensive relative to what it covers.

Warning signs

Any tingling sensation felt in or around the pool, however slight, means everyone out of the water immediately and the electrical system evaluated before anyone gets back in. This is not something to monitor or live with. It indicates a voltage difference that should not exist.

Other signs worth acting on: lights that flicker when equipment starts, breakers that trip repeatedly, GFCIs that will not reset, and corrosion on metal fixtures that seems accelerated.

Permits exist for this

Pool electrical work requires permits and inspection in North Carolina, and the inspection process is specifically designed to catch bonding and GFCI issues before they are buried or energized. A builder or electrician who suggests skipping inspection is telling you everything you need to know.
