A plaster or aggregate pool finish is a cementitious surface sitting in water for its entire life, and its condition is determined almost entirely by how well that water is balanced. Aggressive water dissolves the surface slowly and permanently. Scaling water deposits on it. Balanced water leaves it alone.

Etching: what it is and what it looks like
Etching is the dissolution of the cement matrix in the finish by aggressive water. It shows up as a surface that feels rougher over time, as loss of the smooth finish, and eventually as exposed aggregate where the surrounding cement has dissolved away.
It is cumulative and it does not reverse. A pool that spent two seasons with low pH and low alkalinity carries that damage permanently. Severe cases feel like sandpaper and are genuinely unpleasant to swim in, and they hold dirt and algae because the rough surface gives them somewhere to live.
What makes water aggressive
Water that is short of what it wants will take it from the pool surface. Specifically:
- Low pH. The most common cause, and the fastest acting.
- Low total alkalinity. Alkalinity buffers pH, so low alkalinity means pH swings, and those swings do damage.
- Low calcium hardness. Water low in calcium dissolves calcium out of the plaster. This is why calcium hardness matters even though it does nothing for sanitation, and it is why soft fill water can quietly damage a finish.
- Repeated acid additions without correcting alkalinity, which drives alkalinity down over time.
- Acid poured in one spot rather than distributed with the pump running, which etches a localized area.
The saturation index is the tool that ties pH, alkalinity, calcium hardness and temperature together into a single answer about whether your water is aggressive, balanced or scaling. Any decent pool shop can calculate it, and it is the number that actually protects your finish.
Crazing is not etching
Fine hairline surface cracking in a pattern, sometimes called crazing or check cracking, is a normal characteristic of cementitious finishes. It comes from shrinkage during curing and it is cosmetic. It does not indicate structural failure and it does not require repair.
Distinguish it from structural cracking, which is wider, often follows a line rather than a pattern, may show displacement, and can cause leaks. That is a different conversation entirely and warrants professional evaluation.
Spot etching and localized damage
A few habits cause localized damage that is entirely avoidable:
- Chlorine tablets sitting in a floater against the wall or resting on a step, which bleaches and etches a permanent spot
- Undissolved granular chemical settling on the floor rather than being pre-dissolved or broadcast
- Acid poured directly against a surface instead of distributed slowly with circulation running
- Metal objects left in the pool, which stain and can pit
Roughness that is not etching
Sometimes a rough surface is scale rather than etching, which is the opposite chemistry problem. Scale feels crusty and deposits on top of the surface, while etching removes material from it. The treatments are opposite, so identifying which you have matters. If in doubt, the saturation index tells you which direction your water has been running.
Life expectancy and resurfacing
A plaster finish has a finite service life measured in years, and that life is heavily influenced by water balance. Well-maintained finishes last considerably longer than poorly maintained ones — the difference is not marginal.
Signs it is time to consider resurfacing: widespread roughness that no longer feels acceptable underfoot, extensive exposed aggregate, significant staining that will not lift, delamination where the finish is separating from the shell, and repeated patch repairs that no longer blend.
Resurfacing is also the opportunity to change finish type, and modern aggregate finishes generally offer better durability than traditional white plaster, at higher cost.
Protecting a finish, practically
- Test pH, total alkalinity and calcium hardness regularly, not just chlorine
- Keep the saturation index balanced rather than chasing individual numbers in isolation
- Pre-dissolve granular chemicals or broadcast them with the pump running
- Never let tablets rest against a surface
- Rebalance after adding significant fresh water, which frequently has low calcium
- Brush regularly with a brush appropriate to your finish type
- Take startup on a new finish seriously, since the first thirty days set the surface up for its whole life
