An automatic cleaner is one of the few pool purchases that genuinely buys back time every week. The three main types work on completely different principles, and the right one depends mostly on what falls into your pool and how your equipment is set up.
In the Piedmont, with our tree canopy and heavy spring pollen, debris handling capacity matters more than it would in a wide-open yard.
Robotic cleaners
Fully independent units with their own motor, pump and filter, plugged into a standard outlet. They operate entirely separately from your pool's circulation system.
Strengths: the best cleaning of the three, filtering water through their own onboard media rather than sending debris into your pool filter. Most climb walls and clean the waterline, they scrub rather than just collect, and they use very little electricity. Because they do not tie into your pool plumbing, they add no load to your pump and no wear to your filter.
Trade-offs: highest purchase price, and they are a piece of electronics living in a chemically aggressive environment, so they need care. They must be removed from the water when not in use and stored out of direct sun, and the cord tangles if the unit is not handled well.
Best for: most pools, honestly, and particularly pools with heavy fine debris like pollen, or owners who want the least involvement.
Suction-side cleaners
These connect to a skimmer or dedicated suction line and use your existing pump to drive both movement and debris collection. Debris goes into your pump basket and filter.
Strengths: lowest purchase price, mechanically simple, few parts to fail, and no separate power. They handle fine debris well.
Trade-offs: they load your pool filter with everything they pick up, so you clean the filter more often. They require the pump to run while they work, which adds energy cost. They struggle with large leaves, which clog the throat. And they steal suction from the skimmer, which reduces surface skimming while they operate.
Best for: pools with mostly fine debris and a budget-conscious owner, particularly with a variable-speed pump that makes the runtime affordable.
Pressure-side cleaners
Driven by water pressure from the return side, usually with a dedicated booster pump, and collecting debris into their own bag rather than your filter.
Strengths: excellent with large debris, which matters under oaks and maples. Debris goes into the cleaner bag, not your filter, so filter maintenance drops. They also return filtered water to the pool, aiding circulation.
Trade-offs: most require a separate booster pump, which is both an installation cost and an ongoing energy cost. They are less effective on very fine material, and they are the most complex of the three to keep running.
Best for: pools with heavy leaf load, which describes a lot of Winston-Salem and Greensboro yards with mature canopy.
The Piedmont debris reality
Two seasonal loads dominate here. Spring pollen is fine and it coats everything, which favors robotic and suction cleaners with good fine filtration. Fall leaf drop is bulky, which favors pressure-side units and robotic models with large debris canisters.
If you have both, and most Triad pools do, a robotic cleaner with a large-capacity basket handles the widest range. If your yard is genuinely leaf-heavy, a pressure-side unit earns its keep in October.
What no cleaner does
Set expectations honestly. Automatic cleaners do not replace brushing, particularly on steps, benches, tanning ledges, corners and behind ladders where circulation is weak and algae starts. They do not manage water chemistry. They do not skim the surface as well as a properly functioning skimmer.
They handle the floor and walls, which is the tedious part, and that is plenty.
Buying considerations
- Confirm the unit is rated for your pool size and shape, and for your surface type
- Check whether it climbs walls and cleans the waterline if that matters to you
- Look at how the debris container is accessed, because you will empty it constantly
- Ask about parts availability and service, since brushes, tracks and filters are consumables
- Understand the warranty, particularly for robotic units where electronics are involved
Take care of it and it lasts
Empty the debris container after every cycle rather than letting it dry out full. Rinse robotic units with fresh water and store them out of the sun. Inspect brushes, tracks and hoses periodically. Keep hoses at the correct length for your pool so the unit reaches everywhere without excess coiling.
The most common reason a cleaner underperforms is not the cleaner. It is a full debris bag, worn brushes, or a pool filter and pump that are not moving enough water in the first place.
