Cloudy water is the most common call we get in July, and it is almost always one of a short list of causes. The trouble is that people guess, add three products at once, and end up with water chemistry so scrambled that a two-day fix becomes a two-week one. Work through it in order instead.
Start by testing, not by adding
Before anything goes in the water, get a full test. Not just chlorine and pH, but total alkalinity, calcium hardness, cyanuric acid and combined chlorine. A local pool shop can run a complete panel, and a good test kit at home is worth owning.
Cloudiness is a symptom. The test tells you which cause you are dealing with, and the causes call for opposite responses. Adding shock to water that is cloudy from high calcium makes it worse.
Cause one: filtration is not keeping up
This is the most common cause by a wide margin. Check in this order:
- Run time. In Piedmont summer heat, the pool needs enough daily runtime to turn the water over properly. Short cycles to save energy are a leading cause of cloudy water in July.
- Filter condition. A cartridge that has not been cleaned, DE that needs recharging, or sand that is channeled and past its useful life all reduce filtration dramatically.
- Pressure gauge. A reading meaningfully above the clean starting pressure means it is time to clean or backwash.
- Baskets. Full skimmer and pump baskets restrict flow.
- Air in the system. Bubbles at the returns mean a suction-side leak, which reduces effective circulation.
Fixing filtration alone clears a lot of cloudy pools within a day or two.
Cause two: circulation dead spots
Water that does not move does not get filtered. Aim return jets to create circulation around the pool rather than all pointing the same direction into a corner. Steps, benches, tanning ledges and behind ladders are classic dead zones.
Brushing those areas puts settled material into suspension where the filter can catch it. Brushing is underrated and free.
Cause three: chemistry out of balance
High pH is the classic cloudy-water culprit. Above the ideal range, calcium and other minerals come out of solution and the water goes hazy. It also reduces chlorine effectiveness. Bring pH back into range first and a lot of cloudiness resolves.
High total alkalinity makes pH hard to control and contributes to cloudiness.
High calcium hardness causes scaling and haze, and it is a real consideration in parts of the Piedmont where fill water is hard. It is also the hardest to correct, since lowering it generally means partial draining and refilling.
Low chlorine lets things grow. If free chlorine is low and combined chlorine is elevated, the water needs to be shocked to break down chloramines.
Cause four: early algae
Water that looks slightly dull or greenish-hazy before you see any visible algae on surfaces is often algae in its earliest stage. If chlorine has been low, if the pool has had heavy use, or if it has been hot and stormy, this is a strong candidate.
Shock to the appropriate level, brush the entire pool including walls and steps, run the filter continuously, and clean the filter as it loads up. Follow product labels for dosing and for when it is safe to swim.
Cause five: after a heavy storm
Piedmont thunderstorms wash organic material, pollen, red clay silt and runoff into the pool and dilute the chemistry all at once. Clear the debris, test and rebalance, shock if needed, and expect the filter to need cleaning more often for several days.
Clay silt is genuinely fine and can pass through some filters. A clarifier helps by binding fine particles into larger ones the filter can catch, and a flocculant drops them to the floor to be vacuumed to waste. Use the right one for the situation and follow the label.
Cause six: too much of something
Over-shocking, over-clarifying, or stacking multiple products in a day can itself cause cloudiness. Cyanuric acid that has climbed too high, usually from continuous use of stabilized chlorine tablets, makes chlorine sluggish and is only corrected by dilution.
If you have added several products and things got worse, the right move is usually to stop, run the filter, brush, and retest in 24 hours rather than adding more.
A working sequence
- Test everything
- Clean the filter and baskets, confirm adequate run time
- Correct pH and alkalinity first
- Bring chlorine to the right level, shock if combined chlorine is elevated
- Brush the entire pool
- Run the filter continuously and be patient for 24 to 48 hours
- Only then consider a clarifier or flocculant
