Plumbing is the part of a pool nobody looks at, nobody asks about during the sales process, and nobody can change once the concrete is poured. It is also the decision that determines your energy cost for the life of the pool. Undersized plumbing is one of the most common shortcuts in pool construction and one of the most expensive to live with.
The basic idea
Water moving through pipe encounters resistance, and resistance increases sharply as pipe diameter decreases and as flow rate increases. That resistance is called head loss, and the pump has to overcome it. More head loss means a harder-working pump, more electricity, more noise, and more wear.
Larger pipe reduces velocity for the same flow, and lower velocity means dramatically lower resistance. The cost difference between correctly sized pipe and undersized pipe at construction is modest. The operating cost difference compounds for decades.
Suction and return are not the same
Suction lines, which pull water from skimmers and main drains to the pump, are the more critical side. Water on the suction side is under negative pressure, and excessive velocity there causes cavitation, noise, poor priming and pump damage. Suction lines should be generously sized, and that is not a place to economize.
Return lines carry water back to the pool under pressure. They are more forgiving but still contribute to total head loss, and undersized returns cost energy just as surely.
What else adds resistance
- Fittings. Every elbow, tee and coupling adds resistance. Sweeping bends cost far less than sharp elbows. A plumbing run designed with gentle turns rather than a series of right angles measurably reduces load.
- Run length. The distance from the pool to the equipment pad matters. Equipment located far from the pool for aesthetic reasons costs energy forever.
- Elevation. Lifting water to a raised spa, a waterfall or a pad above the pool adds head. On sloped Piedmont lots this is a genuine design factor.
- Equipment. Filters, heaters and chlorinators each add resistance. A dirty filter adds a lot more.
- Valves. Ball valves are far less restrictive than gate valves, and correct valve selection is a cheap improvement.
Why this matters more now
Variable-speed pumps save the most energy when they run at low speed for long periods, and low-speed operation only moves adequate water if the plumbing has low resistance. A variable-speed pump on undersized plumbing cannot deliver most of its potential savings, because it has to run at higher speed to overcome the restriction.
In other words, the plumbing decision and the pump decision are linked, and the plumbing is the one you cannot revisit.
Water features change the math
Waterfalls, sheer descents, deck jets and bubblers all need specific flow and pressure to look right. Under-plumbed features underperform visually and cannot be fixed by turning the pump up. Features are best plumbed on dedicated lines with their own valves so they can be run independently rather than sharing a circuit with pool circulation.
Spas are the same story, since a spa needs strong jet flow while the pool needs gentle circulation, and those are different requirements on the same pad.
Questions worth asking a builder
- What pipe size is being used for suction lines, and for returns?
- How many returns, and where are they placed for circulation?
- Are water features and the spa on dedicated lines?
- Is there provision for future equipment, such as a heater added later?
- How far is the equipment pad from the pool, and why is it located there?
- Are sweeping bends used instead of sharp elbows where practical?
A builder who answers these specifically is telling you something useful. A builder who has not thought about them is telling you something too.
Return placement affects everything downstream
Returns are not just where water comes back. Their number, position and aim determine circulation, which determines whether chemicals distribute evenly, whether the filter sees the whole volume of water, and whether dead spots form where algae starts. Too few returns, or all of them aimed the same direction, produces exactly the low-circulation corners that generate maintenance problems for years.
The permanent decision
Everything else on a pool can be changed. Pumps, filters, heaters, lights, finishes and decking all get replaced over the life of a pool. The plumbing buried under the deck and the shell does not, short of major demolition.
