Stains on a pool surface are common and very treatable, provided you identify the type first. Treating an organic stain with a metal treatment does nothing. Treating a metal stain with chlorine can set it permanently. Two spot tests, done in five minutes, tell you which you are dealing with.
The two spot tests
Vitamin C test. Hold a vitamin C tablet against the stain for about thirty seconds. If the stain lightens or disappears under the tablet, it is a metal stain, because ascorbic acid is a mild reducing agent that lifts metal staining.
Chlorine test. Hold a chlorine tablet against the stain, or apply a small amount of granular chlorine directly. If it lightens, the stain is organic.
If neither test does anything, you are most likely looking at calcium scale or surface etching rather than a stain at all.
Organic stains
Look like: green, brown, or reddish-brown marks, often in the shape of whatever caused them. Leaves, acorns, berries, algae residue and worms all leave characteristic outlines.
Cause: organic material left sitting on the surface. In the Triad, fall leaf drop under mature canopy is the primary source, and berries from ornamental trees are a close second.
Treatment: brush the area vigorously, then shock the pool to the appropriate level following label instructions. Most organic stains lift with chlorine and brushing. Persistent ones may need an enzyme product or a targeted application of granular chlorine directly on the stain, which should be done carefully to avoid bleaching a vinyl liner or damaging plaster.
Prevention: remove debris promptly rather than letting it sit on the floor, maintain adequate sanitizer, and consider a cover during heavy leaf drop.
Metal stains
Look like: the color tells you the metal. Iron stains rusty brown or reddish. Copper stains blue-green or teal. Manganese stains purple-black or dark brown. They are often broad and diffuse rather than shaped.
Cause: metals dissolved in the water coming out of solution and depositing on surfaces. Sources include well water with high iron or manganese, which is a genuine consideration on rural Piedmont properties, corroding copper plumbing or heat exchanger, some algaecides that contain copper, and occasionally metal objects left in the pool.
Treatment: this is where sequence matters. Lower chlorine first, because oxidizing conditions set metal stains. Then use an ascorbic acid based stain remover per its label, and once the stain lifts, add a metal sequestrant to hold the metals in solution so they do not redeposit. Sequestrant needs periodic reapplication.
Prevention: if you fill from a well, test the fill water for iron and manganese and pre-treat or filter it. Add sequestrant whenever adding significant fresh water. Keep pH in range, since high pH encourages metals to precipitate.
Calcium scale
Looks like: white, gray or crusty deposits, most often at the waterline, on tile, and around water features. It feels rough rather than looking like a color change.
Cause: calcium carbonate coming out of solution, driven by high calcium hardness, high pH, high alkalinity, high water temperature, or evaporation concentrating minerals. Parts of the Piedmont have hard fill water, which makes this more common.
Treatment: scale does not respond to stain treatments because it is a deposit, not a stain. Light scale can sometimes be handled with a scale remover or careful acid application. Heavier deposits on tile usually need professional bead blasting. On plaster, significant scale may point toward resurfacing.
Prevention: keep calcium hardness, pH and alkalinity balanced, which is exactly what the saturation index is for. Use a scale inhibitor if your fill water is hard.
Why balance prevents most of this
Almost every staining and scaling problem traces back to water that is not balanced. Water that is aggressive dissolves material out of surfaces and equipment, which puts metals into the water that later stain. Water that is scaling deposits minerals. Balanced water does neither.
Testing pH, total alkalinity and calcium hardness regularly, rather than testing only chlorine, is what prevents the whole category.
A note on new plaster
A newly plastered pool is chemically active during its first month and is unusually vulnerable to both staining and etching. Follow the startup regimen your builder specifies, brush frequently, and keep chemistry tightly controlled during that window. Mistakes made in the first thirty days show permanently.
