Saltwater pools are popular for good reasons: softer-feeling water, no handling of chlorine products, and steadier sanitizer levels. What gets undersold is that a salt system is a chlorine system. It generates chlorine on site from salt in the water rather than eliminating it, and it comes with its own small set of maintenance obligations.
Owners who understand those obligations get many years out of a cell. Owners who assume the system is self-managing tend to replace cells early.
What the system actually does
Salt dissolved in the pool water passes through a cell containing coated metal plates. An electrical current across those plates converts chloride into chlorine, which sanitizes the water and then reverts back to chloride, ready to cycle again. Salt is not consumed, only lost through splash-out, backwashing and rain overflow.
That cycle is why you rarely need to add salt, and why the plates in the cell are the wear item.
The cell is the thing to look after
Inspect it regularly. Every month or two, look at the plates. Calcium scale builds on them as white deposits, and scale insulates the plates so the cell produces less chlorine and works harder trying.
Clean it when needed, not on a schedule. Many modern cells are self-cleaning by reversing polarity, and over-cleaning shortens cell life because the acid removes some of the plate coating each time. Clean when you see meaningful scale, using the manufacturer's recommended dilution and method, and never scrape the plates with anything metal.
Expect a service life measured in years, not decades. Cells wear out, and how quickly depends heavily on water balance and how often they have been acid cleaned.
Balance is what protects the cell
The biggest determinant of cell life is water chemistry, specifically calcium hardness and pH. Water that scales deposits on the plates. Salt systems also naturally drive pH upward as a byproduct of generating chlorine, which means:
- pH needs checking more often than owners expect, because it climbs on its own
- Rising pH plus hard water accelerates scaling on the cell and on the pool surfaces
- Keeping total alkalinity in range makes pH easier to hold
Parts of the Piedmont have hard fill water, which makes this a real consideration here rather than a theoretical one.
Test salt, and test it properly
The system's onboard salt reading is a useful indicator and it drifts as the cell ages. Verify it with an independent test a few times a season. Salt that is too low means the system cannot produce enough chlorine and can damage the cell over time. Too high is wasteful and can be corrosive.
Add salt after significant water replacement, heavy rain overflow, or a lot of backwashing, and follow the manufacturer's target range for your specific system.
Stabilizer still matters
Cyanuric acid protects chlorine from being destroyed by sunlight, and a salt pool needs it just as much as any other pool. Without adequate stabilizer, the chlorine your cell produces is burned off by the sun almost as fast as it is made, and the system runs constantly trying to keep up. That is hard on the cell and expensive.
Test cyanuric acid a few times a season. Too little and you are wasting cell life; too much and chlorine becomes sluggish, which is only corrected by dilution.
Corrosion, honestly
Salt pools run at a salinity far below seawater, but salt water is still more corrosive than fresh over time, particularly at the waterline and on metal components near the pool. Natural stone coping, some metal fixtures, and certain hardware are more affected than others.
The practical responses are choosing materials appropriately at the design stage, rinsing salt off adjacent hardscape and fixtures periodically, keeping water balanced, and ensuring proper bonding of metal components. This is a specification issue at build time more than a maintenance issue afterward.
Winter and the Piedmont
Salt cells generally do not produce chlorine effectively in cold water, and most systems will not run below a certain water temperature. That is by design and is not a fault. If you keep a pool open through a Triad winter, plan for supplemental sanitization during the cold stretch, and follow the manufacturer's guidance on removing and storing the cell if the pool is closed.
The short version
Test pH more often than you would on a chlorine pool, keep calcium hardness and alkalinity in range, verify salt and stabilizer a few times a season, inspect the cell every month or two, and clean it only when it needs it. That routine is what separates a cell that lasts from one that does not.
