Secondary sanitizers get marketed as a way to have a chlorine-free pool, and that framing causes most of the disappointment around them. What they actually do is reduce the burden on your primary sanitizer, which is a real and worthwhile benefit — it is just not the benefit people think they bought.
Every one of these systems still requires a chlorine residual in the water.
Why a residual is non-negotiable
UV and ozone treat water as it passes through the equipment. They do nothing to water sitting in the pool. If a swimmer introduces contamination at the shallow end, that contamination is not addressed until the water reaches the equipment pad, which could be a long time.
A chlorine residual is present everywhere in the pool all the time, which is why it remains the primary sanitizer and why every one of these systems is described as supplemental.
UV systems
Water passes through a chamber where ultraviolet light inactivates microorganisms by disrupting their DNA. It works on things that circulate through the unit and it leaves nothing behind in the water.
Real benefits: it destroys chloramines, which are the compounds responsible for the strong pool smell and eye irritation. It reduces overall chlorine demand. It has no effect on water chemistry or water balance.
Considerations: the lamp is a consumable and needs periodic replacement, typically annually, and its output declines before it fails. The quartz sleeve needs cleaning, particularly in hard water. No residual protection in the pool. Effectiveness depends on adequate flow rate through the unit.
Ozone systems
Ozone is generated at the equipment pad and injected into the water, where it is a powerful oxidizer that breaks down organic material and contaminants, then reverts to oxygen.
Real benefits: strong oxidation reduces the organic load your chlorine would otherwise handle, which lowers chlorine demand and reduces chloramine formation. Water often feels and looks noticeably better.
Considerations: ozone dissipates quickly, so again there is essentially no residual. Generators need maintenance and eventual replacement. Systems must be correctly installed with proper contact and off-gassing, since ozone is a respiratory irritant and should not be reaching the pool surface in gas form.
Mineral systems
These introduce minerals, usually silver and copper compounds, into the water. Silver has antibacterial properties and copper is algaestatic.
Real benefits: allows a reduced chlorine level while maintaining sanitation, and helps with algae control.
Considerations: copper in the water is exactly what causes blue-green metal staining on pool surfaces and can discolor light hair. That risk goes up when pH is not controlled. Mineral cartridges are consumables. And with any system involving metals, water balance discipline matters more, not less.
Where these genuinely make sense
The best case for a secondary sanitizer is a pool where chloramines are a persistent problem: heavy bather load, indoor or enclosed pools with limited air exchange, or a household with swimmers sensitive to chlorine byproducts. UV in particular is excellent at chloramine destruction and that is a specific, real benefit.
They also make sense for owners who want to reduce chlorine consumption and are willing to maintain the equipment.
They make less sense as a way to avoid pool chemistry, because they do not.
The cheaper things to do first
Before adding a secondary system, most pools benefit more from fundamentals:
- Correct cyanuric acid level, which protects chlorine from UV and is free to fix
- Adequate pump run time and proper circulation
- A clean, correctly sized filter
- pH held in range, since high pH makes chlorine much less effective
- A cover, which reduces sunlight-driven chlorine loss substantially
A pool with those in order and still fighting chloramines is a good candidate for UV. A pool with those neglected will not be rescued by any secondary system.
Combining with a salt system
Salt chlorine generators and secondary sanitizers work together fine, since a salt system is a chlorine system. Adding UV to a salt pool reduces the cell workload, which extends cell life — a genuine practical benefit given that cells are the wear item on a salt system.
Sizing and installation
All of these depend on adequate and appropriate flow through the unit, which ties back to plumbing and pump selection. An undersized unit or one installed on a line that does not carry the required flow will underperform regardless of quality.
